DANFORTH CENTER PRESIDENT ROGER N. BEACHY NAMED RESEARCH & DEVELOPMENT (R&D) MAGAZINE'S 1999 SCIENTIST OF THE YEAR.

St. Louis, MO, November 4, 1999 - - Roger N. Beachy, Ph.D., president of the Donald Danforth Plant Science Center, has been named Research & Development (R&D) Magazine's 1999 Scientist of the Year.

Beachy, who is featured in the cover story of R&D's November 1999 issue, was honored "for his innovative research and his efforts to bring the latest transgenic technologies to the third world." The article is entitled "Roger Beachy: A Leader in Revitalizing Plant Science," and outlines Beachy’s thirty years of work in the field of plant science, beginning with his novel research as a graduate student at Michigan State University and following his career to his present position as the recently appointed founding president of the Donald Danforth Plant Science Center in St. Louis.

"I am humbled to have been selected for this honor by R&D Magazine," said Beachy. "The entire plant science research community can draw encouragement from the fact that a publication of this type, which reaches widely into the business community, would recognize the importance of discovery and innovation in plant biology in the same manner as is accorded other scientific disciplines."

R&D Magazine was established in 1959 and has a monthly circulation of more than 100,000. It serves scientists, engineers, research managers, and others in the applied research and development community.
